Girls who get an early first menstrual period, tend to experience depression during adolescence. That's according to research by a team of researchers from Bristol University, UK.
They involve groups of girls ages 10, 13 and 14 years to examine the relationship between the initial time periods and depression.
Research shows, girls who get first menstruation before the age of 11.5 years tend to experience depression at the age of 13 and 14 years. Then, the new get first menstruation at the age of 13.5 years are relatively less likely to suffer the same symptoms.
"Girls who mature earlier may feel isolated and have to face reality and change, where they are not ready emotionally," said head researcher Dr Carol Joinson of the School of Social and Community Medicine at Bristol University, as quoted by NY Daily News.
These changes include hormonal fluctuations and conflicts with friends or parents. This includes when they suddenly get special attention from the opposite sex.
This study only see a trigger depression in teenagers by the time the initial period. The relationship between early puberty and depression is at least useful for developing models of psychological therapy to mute it, sort of counseling.
"If young girls with early puberty are at greater risk exposed to psychological problems, it is important to help them either through school or family-based program, which aims as a precautionary measure," said Joinson.
